What our guests say

This was unlike any other wine tour we've been on. Our visit to two wineries we never would have known was highlighted by lively conversation, history and the knowledge of our incredible trekking guide. We got real in-depth tours of the vineyards and an education with personal attention. We recommend this tour for casual wine lovers as well as those more experienced, and for anyone who loves a good hike through some glorious countryside.

Brunello di Montalcino Trekking & Wine Tour Program

Explore Montalcino's pristine nature and the surrounding countryside on our Brunello di Montalcino Trekking tour! Your friendly, local, English-speaking private trekking guide will guide you through the isolated valley where the Abbey of Sant'Antimo rests, one of Tuscany's most beautiful monuments. Legend suggests a late 8th-century construction by Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne, but the oldest sections in the present cathedral date back to the 9th-century. You will see the alabaster used to create the outer walls and inner columns, creating a translucent effect in the sunlight!

During your hiking tour of the Brunello wine region you'll stop at a cutting-edge winery for a full tour of the winery and a wine and extra-virgin olive oil tastings. Arriving on foot to the winery, you'll visit the historic cellars and the rooms where grapes are processed and fermented according to very strict Brunello di Montalcino standard regulations. Your professional trekking guide will continue the hiking wine tour through this pure countryside to a small farmhouse specializing in delicious meals prepared with simple, fresh ingredients. The Brunello di Montalcino Trekking and Wine Tour picks up again in the afternoon with a stop in a second winery before you return to Sant'Antimo to wrap up your trekking tour.

Depending on winery availability, your exploration on foot of the spectacular Brunello region may include a stop for lunch in Montalcino. Here you'll be able to wander through the town's narrow winding streets leading to the Fortezza, the 14th-century structure where Sienese forces took shelter as Siena was annexed by Florence in 1555. The view from the ramparts is stunning, while the ground floor hosts a well-stocked wine shop where you can continue your wine experience by sampling additional Brunello wine by the glass.

These leisurely trekking walks generally take place around Montalcino or Sant'Antimo, depending on winery availability and your preference. These towns are reachable in a private car from Florence or Siena. We can arrange private transfers upon request - please contact us for more information.

Some Historical Background to your Brunello di Montalcino Trekking & Wine Tour

Brunello was developed by Ferruccio Biondi Santi just over a century ago. The wine immediately received attention from connoisseurs enamored with its high-quality and excellent aromas. Brunello is produced exclusively within the Montalcino territory, and only from Sangioveto Grosso grapes, a Sangiovese clone perfectly suited to local conditions.  Before consumption, Brunello must be aged for four years, at least two of which must be in wooden casks.
