Frascati Wine Tour from Rome

Best known for its white wines, the ancient volcanic hills outside Rome are the perfect escape from the crowds and lines of Rome's city center.

Your English-speaking driver with luxury vehicle will pick you up at your accommodations in Rome and off you go!  Out of the city and into the verdant hills where Roman emperors built their vacation homes outside of Rome.  This area has been inhabited for millennium and has a unique aura of ancient ways.  Your first stop will be a beautiful vineyard and winery specializing in dry white wine, but with fantastic red and sparkling wines as well.

After a fascinating tour with your English-speaking winery guide, where you'll learn about the Frascati region's wine history, you will have a guided tasting of the estate's delicious and refreshing wine.

What would Rome be without its fascinating history?  You can choose between a visit to Villa d'Este in Tivoli, the Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa) archeological site, or the town of Frascati itself depending on your individual interests.

See below for a little bit of info on each to help you make your decision.

Villa d'Este in Tivoli

Villa d'Este is a masterpiece of the Italian Garden-style and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.  Filled to the brim with fountains and grottoes, it is revered as one of the best examples of Baroque-style European gardens.

Villa Adriana Archeological Site

Also known as Hadrian's Villa, this unbelievable archeological site is more than 80 hectares in size, about the size of Pompeii.  It is the most extensive ruins of a Roman villa to be found anywhere and dates back to 117 A. D. when it was built by Emperor Hadrian.

Frascati Ancient Hilltop Town

The town of Frascati is first mentioned in the 1st century A.D.  The town owes its current fame to the villas built by popes and Roman nobles from the 16th century onwards.  These country estates were built as status symbols and not as farming estates as in other parts of Italy.  There are also beautiful churches sprinkled throughout the town.

The Tour Continues

The next stop will be for a late lunch and wine-tasting at your second Frascati winery.  After a relaxing lunch enjoying the countryside atmosphere, you will have a tour of this top-rated Frascati winery followed by a guided tasting with an English-speaking winery guide before your car and driver take you back to your accommodations in Rome.

About the Frascati Wine Region

The Frascati wine region is about 30 minutes driving time outside of Rome.  Frascati is a white wine that has been made for thousands of years and comes with an incredible history and importance.  This wine is mentioned in important Italian texts and has been historically appreciated by popes and emperors, nobles and regular Romans alike.

Although Frascati is so important to this region, it's not as famous as Chianti or Barbaresco, possibly because it is a fresh white wine usually drunk young or because most of Frascati is sold and consumed in the bustling trattorias and restaurants and bars of Rome, just a few miles from where it is produced.  Frascati is a DOC wine and can be either sweet or dry, and either Spumante or still.  The wines must be made of at least 50% Malvasia Bianca di Candia with the remaining grapes usually being Trebbiano, Malvasia, Greco or other local varieties.
