What our guests say

Our final wine tour was to Friuli Venezia Giulia from Venice and it was an experience we had never encountered before. Lunch was brilliant at a local restaurant we were also treated to a vinegar tasting on the property. The wines again were different in style to what we were expecting but a brilliant experience. Once again I have to thank Carrie on the brilliant job she did organising the tour so brilliantly in such short notice, every winery for their generous hospitality, the restaurants for mind-blowing culinary experiences and finally the drivers that took us from each location to the next. If you're looking for a great wine tour company in Italy, go with Le Baccanti!

Friuli Wine Tour Program

Experience Friuli's top-rated wineries and see historic sites on this fascinating and informational full-day unique wine tour.  Your private tour begins when your friendly, English-speaking chauffeur comes to collect you at your accommodations with a luxury vehicle to escort you in style throughout your special day.  From here, you'll be taken into the pristine countryside to visit one of the top local wineries in the area.

Your first visit includes a guided tour of the villa and a tasting of the estate's prestigious wines led by an English-speaking winery guide and expert.  Next up on your full-day wine tasting tour will be a visit to one of the charming local small towns, and a chance to stop for a delicious lunch in an inviting trattoria brimming with authentic Mittel-European atmosphere.  Several sorts of fresh Adriatic fish, most of which are available only within Italy and are true gourmet culinary delights, are brought in daily to the Trieste docks and all are thoroughly enjoyable with any of the local white wines.

In the afternoon, you'll experience another wonderful visit to a prominent regional winery.  After your tour of the cellars, you will get to taste this estate's red and white wines and begin to develop an understanding of what makes this Friuli wine region so unique, and so special.

Additional details and history about the Friuli Wine region

The Friuli wine region can be reached in about two hours from Venice and one hour or less from Trieste.

Trieste was the Austro-Hungarian Empire's only deep-harbor with access to global shipping lanes until 1918, an advantage point that created great wealth for this region throughout most of the 19th century. Three vibrant, creative cultures and languages intermingled locally: Austrian-German, Venetian-Italian and Balkan-Slavic.  Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived and worked side-by-side peacefully for generations, and the city blossomed into a sophisticated, intellectual capital with grandiose architecture, and was widely noted for its musical and literary life.  In 1920, two years after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste became a part of Italy, but quickly lost its cultural and commercial relevance in Europe's new, post-war order.  One visits Trieste today to hear the echoes of its rich past, for the imposing and unspoilt mountainous hinterland of the entire Friuli-Venezia Giulia region...and of course, for the region's wines.

A Little Something About Friuli Wines

Friuli wines can be included with the wines of Tuscany, Piedmont and Veneto as Italy's top-ranking, world-class wine products. Thanks to Slovenia and the Istrian Peninsula's geographic closeness, these wines manifest unmistakable Slavic and Austrian influences.  Nearly two thirds of Friuli-Venezia Giulia labels enjoy DOC status, while the rest proudly display their DOCG labels.  Fine white wines predominate and are rated among Italy's best, especially the Malvasia and Vitovska.  Terranno, on the other hand, is an earthy red wine beloved by countless connoisseurs.  Names such as Gravner, Felluga, Yerman are known around throughout the world of wine lovers.

*Please note a surcharge of Euro 90 will apply for all Venice pick-ups.*
