What our guests say

We're home and richer for the experiences - thank you so much. We had a wonderful time there in Tuscany and can't express enough how outstanding a job you did in filling our days with interesting and fun-filled activities and sightseeing. Siena, yes, indeed was incredible. We loved our guide! She was a character -- very bohemian and totally interesting. I loved that! What's the name of the Siena cakes? The black pepper cakes? We were going to write it down and then we forgot to do that. I want to order it for Christmas.-Molly Evans

Siena Medieval Food and Life Walk Program

One of the most well-known artistic masterpieces in Siena is Ambrogio Lorenzetti's fresco of the Allegory of Good and Bad Government located in the Siena Town Hall.  Countless books have been published describing this famous work of art painted in the 1300s, but very few mention a fundamental aspect of this work: food and farming.

More than 600 years ago, Lorenzetti depicted Siena, one of the most heavily populated cities at the time, as a microcosm of frenetic activity surrounding food and its production.  In the fresco, wine is being sold, food is being transported, fields are being prepared, and there is a marriage banquet and scenes of hunting.

Your knowledgeable English-speaking guide, who is specialized in art history, will guide you into the world of medieval food to discover what foods existed, how food was preserved, the common farm animals of the time and the most prized dishes served on medieval tables.  After a visit to the museum housed in the Town Hall to view and discuss Lorenzetti's works, your expert food guide will take you through Siena's Piazza del Campo, the shell-shaped piazza in the heart of Siena and where the Palio horse race is held twice yearly.

Enjoy a well-deserved delicious locally-produced gelato alongside your guide as your imagination creates images of what this ancient piazza would have looked filled with people, food, animals, and even more confusion than there is today!
