Your private walk begins in Siena's famous 13th-century Piazza del Campo, the stunning main square, where the famous Palio horse race is still held twice each summer. Your fun and knowledgeable English-speaking guide will explain the history of Siena and point out all the main attractions that face onto the Campo, including Palazzo Pubblico (the Siena Town Hall) and its majestic bell tower. Then on to the Duomo, main cathedral, one of the most impressive examples of Italian gothic architecture, built between 1180 and 1370. At the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, you guide will lead you through rooms filled with treasures of great Sienese art, and together you can ascend to the top of the frontone for a breathtaking view of Siena and its environs.
The 15th-century palace and courtyard of the counts Chigi-Seracini is a world music and musicology center. It was here that Antonio Vivaldi (1675-1741) was rediscovered in the 1930s, and his works were performed publicly for the first time since his death. Listen for the sound of beautiful music coming from within the walls, as the students are often practicing. And finally, a stop at the headquarters of the world's oldest existing bank: the Monte dei Paschi di Siena,founded in 1471.
