TESTIMONIALS
| We're home and richer for the experiences -- thank you so much. We had a wonderful time there in Tuscany and can't express enough how outstanding a job you did in filling our days with interesting and fun-filled activities and sightseeing. Siena, yes, indeed was incredible. We loved our guide! She was a character -- very bohemian and totally interesting. I loved that! What's the name of the Siena cakes? The black pepper cakes? We were going to write it down and then we forgot to do that. I want to order it for Christmas.-Molly Evans |

Expert guide who shares unique view of Siena
Siena Medieval Food and Life Walk Program
One of the most well known works of art in Siena is surely the fresco of the Allegory of Good and Bad Government in the Siena Town Hall painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in the 1300's. Countless books have been published describing this famous work of art, but very few have even mentioned one of the most important aspects of this work: food and farming. More than 600 years ago, Lorenzetti depicted his hometown of Siena, one of the 20 most populous cities at the time, as a microcosm of frenetic activity surrounding food and its production. In the fresco, wine is being sold, food is being transported, fields are being prepared, there is a marriage banquet and scenes of hunting. Together with your knowledgeable art history guide you will delve into the world of medieval food, find out what foods existed, how food was preserved, the common farm animals of the time and the most prized dishes served on medieval tables. After a visit to the museum housed in the Town Hall to view and discuss Lorenzetti's work of art, your expert guide will take you through Siena's Piazza del Campo, the shell shaped “square†at the heart of Siena and where the Palio horse race is held every year. Enjoy a well-deserved gelato alongside your guide as you together imagine how this piazza would have looked filled with people, food, animals and even more confusion that there is today! |
