Best of Bologna Walking Tour Program
With a friendly expert as your guide for this half day walking tour, you'll discover the riches of Bologna, one of Italy's most important centers of learning and culture and a treasure trove of historical sights. Bologna is home to the oldest university in the western world, founded in 1088 AD, and the tradition of ideas is ever present in this thriving city.
Bologna's historic city center is the second most extensive in Europe after Venice, and is filled to the brim with Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque monuments. You're English-speaking guide will meet you in the majestic Piazza Maggiore, the city's main gathering place, built in the 13th century, with its famous statue of Neptune. The square is dominated by the Basilica of San Petronio, one of the largest churches in the world.
A wealth of beautiful churches grace the city's center, including Santo Stefano, known as the Sette Chiese, “seven churches” for its basilica, sanctuary and other buildings. With your guide describing all the most important details, you can marvel at the more than twenty medieval towers that dominate the skyline, including Bologna's very own leaning tower.
Like a true Bolognese, you'll walk along the city's famous porticos, which provide elegant shelter from the elements. There is an astonishing total of almost 38 kilometers of these graceful arcades in the old city, including the Portico of San Luca which is 666 arcades long. Of course, no visit to Bologna would be complete without learning first-hand why Italians affectionately call it “the fat one.” Your guide will help you find the best little restaurant to relax and enjoy the renowned Bolognese cuisine for lunch. |
