Friuli Wine Tour Program

Experience Friuli's top rated wineries and see historical sites on this fascinating and informational tour. Your tour begins when your friendly English-speaking chauffeur comes to collect you at your accommodation. You will be taken out into the pristine countryside to visit one of the top wineries of the area. Here you will have a guided tour of the villa and tasting of the estate's world class wines. Until 1918, Trieste, was the Austro-Hungarian Empire's only deep harbor with access to world shipping lanes, a circumstance that brought in great wealth throughout most of the nineteenth century. Three vibrant and creative cultures and languages intermingled here: Austrian German, Venetian Italian and Slavonic Balkan. Christians, Jews and Muslims lived and labored side by side peacefully for generations. The city blossomed into a sophisticated, intellectual capital with grandiose architecture and was widely noted for its musical and literary life. For example, James Joyce (1882-1941) lived there from 1904 to 1914. In 1920, two years after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste became a part of Italy, but in the new post-war order of Europe swiftly lost its cultural and commercial significance. One visits Trieste today to hear the echoes of it's rich past, for the imposing and largely unspoilt mountainous hinterland of the entire Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. . . and of course for the region's wines.

Next up on your tour is a visit to one of the charming small towns of the region and a chance to stop for a memorable lunch in a respected trattoria rich in authentic old-world Mittel- European atmosphere. Several sorts of fresh Adriatic fish are brought in daily to the Trieste docks and all go down so sumptuously with any of the local whites! In the afternoon, you will have a chance to visit another wonderful winery of the region. After your tour of the cellars, you will get to taste this estates wines and begin to understand what sets the Friuli wine region apart from all others.

A Little Something About Friuli Wines

Friuli wines stand with those of Tuscany, Piedmont and Veneto as Italy's top-ranking world-class products. Owing to the nearness of Slovenia and the Istrian Peninsula they manifest unmistakable Slavic and traditionally Austrian influences. Nearly two thirds of Friuli-Venezia Giulia labels are entitled to DOC status whilst the rest take pride in their DOCG. Fine white wine predominate and are rated among Italy's best, especially the Malvasia and Vitovska. Terranno, on the other hand, is an earthy red beloved by countless connoisseurs. Names such as Gravner, Felluga, Yerman are known around throughout the world of wine lovers.
