You will discover the pivotal role that wine played in the life of ancient Romans and how wine has evolved over the centuries form a sweet spiced sirup-like drink to the refined product that today's Romans still appreciate. You'll pause to see famous and obscure landmarks that will unveil this little-known but fascinating heritage. As your engaging expert leads you through the tasting of four fine wines you'll also learn about Italy's incredible winemaking legacy, famous throughout the world. Your first stop will be in an enoteca, or wine bar, to taste two fine white wines from the outlying countryside, and enjoy delicious local snacks. Your expert will tell you how wine is made and about the basics of wine tasting technique. You'll learn how to identify certain characteristics and the main aromas of wine but also the hidden and most common defects that you can find in a bottle. If you are already knowledgeable about the basics of wine tastings your expert will gear the tasting to the next level with a comparative tasting or a discussion over wines that you can choose together. As you walk to your next tasting, you'll discover the grand history of Rome's Emperors and how they influenced the spreading of winemaking in a large part of the world. The famous vintage of 121BC, the so-called Opimian Vintage, unfortunately is no longer available!... but your expert will be sure that you taste some more recent excellent products. The tiny side-alley wine shops will help you fully understand the city's colorful wine history.
