Irpinia Wine Tour from Naples or Salerno Program

Campania is famous around the world for it's astonishing landscapes and deep blues sea dotted with the fabled islands on which, ancient tradition would have it, the Sirens dwelt and sang their songs to lure sailors to their doom. But just a few kilometers inland from Naples a true wine paradise awaits for those seeking a different off-the-beaten-track Italy: Irpinia. Cult wines such as Mastroberadino, Feudi di San Gregorio and Galardi among others are a feature of this terrific wine region. Your Irpinia wine tour from Naples or Salerno starts when your friendly English speaking chauffeur greets you at your hotel to drive you inland. After a leisurely drive you will stop at an exclusive winery rated highly by the most influential European and American wine publications and taste a selection of fresh zesty whites and fruity, intense reds. A personable winery guide or the winery owner himself will give you a tour of the estates while telling you about Campania's wine appellations, varieties and wines. For lunch we'll book you in a fine local restaurant where you'll be able to sample more great Irpinian wines. In the afternoon you'll continue your exploration of the region by visiting a second great winery in the region. This visit brings you Irpinia wine tour to the end before returning to your hotel in Naples or Salerno comfortably seated in one of our luxury vehicles.

Irpinia Wine Region History

The Region of Campania is well established on tourist maps but, curiously, not on those of wine lovers. Yet these noble and mellow hills have long presented the world with superb products, many of them derived from Ancient Greek grape varietals: little-known "blockbuster" reds and fragrant, delicate whites. The names Greco, a white varietal, and Aglianico, both mean ā€œGreekā€, the latter deriving from hellenic. The Roman naturalist and historian Pliny the Elder (23-79 A.D.) described both of these grapes in his Encyclopedia.

On an interesting side note, Feudi di San Gregorio's spectacular wine cellar was designed by Japanese architect Hikaru Mori and is reputed to have cost twenty-five million dollars. Feudi wines are known for being concentrated but with finesse.
