Taking the time to chat about these things with a live person who works and lives in Rome helps avoid disagreeable and often expensive pitfalls that can be experienced when relying on the internet or guide books (which often contain information no longer current, or compromised). If you hit it off with the guide and like their suggestions, they will put you in touch with the right people, alert you of the best local and seasonal events, advise you on the best means of transportation, share reserved insider knowledge (chosen for quality of their cuisine and good prices), show you rustic beauty spots here, there and wherever you'd like to explore on his/her suggestion, explain historical and art-historical background matters (without which you miss out on a great deal of interesting points), and even get you to try out your linguistic skills by having you attempt to banter with the locals, if you'd like to try that, in basic Roman vocabulary that he/she would teach you.
