Chianti Trekking and Wine Tour Program
Our Chianti trekking tour is a wonderful way to discovering Tuscany’s rural attractions. Absorbing the colours and listening to the subtle sounds of nature whilst breathing in the pervasive aromas of pine, thyme, rosemary and sage makes impressions you’ll take home and enjoy long into the future. Our trekking tours of the Chianti region will take you over paved and unpaved country roads, on narrow paths through vineyards and olive groves, and to romantic ruins of ancient castles and fortifications.
You will meet your professional, officially licensed trekking guide in a small Chianti village, and together walk to a historic winery. Here you’ll tour the estate, learn about about wine and winemaking, and have a wine tasting of the winery’s current production. You will then walk to a medieval walled Chianti village, where you will enjoy lunch in a good restaurant, with wine. After a walk through other lovely Chianti paths and countryside, you will arrive at a second winery to see different methods of winemaking.
All of the wineries we go to on our Chianti trekking tour are highly rated by the leading European and American publications. You will taste excellent wines, as well as Tuscany’s very special Extra Virgin olive oil.
These leisurely trekking walks normally take place around Greve, Radda in Chianti or Castellina depending on winery availability. These towns are reachable by local public transportation or in your private car from Florence or Siena. A private transfer can be arranged on request, please contact us for more information about private transfers.
Some Historical Back Ground for your Chianti Trekking Wine Tour
Chianti Classico is truly the heart of Tuscany and its primary wine zone. The region's fame was confirmed in 1716 when Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici issued an ordinance to regulate the wine trade after some unscrupulous merchants labeled as "Chianti" a consignment of wines from dubious sources. Thus Tuscany became the first European state to safeguard an appellation of origin (label to distinguish wines). Today the Chianti Classico is one of Tuscany's most prestigious DOCG areas. The symbol of the Chianti Classico consortium is the gallo nero or black rooster, which you will see adorning road signs and wine bottles throughout the region. The Chianti area was further developed in the mid-1800s by Baron Bettino Ricasoli, who made Chianti wine by combining: Sangiovese grapes for strength and character, Cannaiolo grapes for grace and Malvasia grapes for zest. However, this wine was intended to be drunk young and was not suitable for aging. The modern recipe for Chianti Classico must have at least 80% Sangiovese grapes with the remaining 20% to be decided upon by the winemaker. Modern Chianti Classico is often very well suited to aging, especially the Reserva wines. |
