Rome Ostia Antica Tour Program

Ostia, once a city and seaport whose life-span extended over eight hundred years beginning in about 220 B.C., is today an unusually well-preserved archaeological site near Rome and an essential stop-over for anyone with an interest in day-to-day life in the late Roman Republic and all throughout the Empire. You will meet your expert guide at the entrance to Ostia Antica. Together you will traverse the incredible ruins, as your expert guide introduces you to what was then the city’s daily life, its arts, its culture, its language. Ostia grew as a sea port at the mouth of the Tiber some thirty kilometres, or twenty miles, west of the city of Rome, but by the end of the third century A.C. steady silting had moved the coast some five kilometers seaward. As in Pompei, Herculaneum, Stabiae and a few other sites, cobble-paved streets pass among the remains of shops, taverns, dwellings, public hot-water baths and the ubiquitous theater. One building is even thought to have housed the world’s first firemen's benevolent association. With a bit of imagination the daily hue, cry and bustle becomes nearly audible . . . certainly few visitors fail to be touched at by the spell of times long past. After your walking tour, your guide can give you suggestions for lunch or dinner in the charming nearby town of Castello di Giulio II with largely intact medieval walls surrounding the charming historic area.
