The Arnaldo Caprai winery is in Torre di Montefalco inthe Perugia (Umbria) region. Arnaldo Caprai, a businessman turned winemaker, bought the estate in 1971 to fulfill his lifelong dream of making his own wine. His original estate included only 5 hectares, but as he saw the enormous potential of the local grape varieties he continued to expand his estate by buying more land. In 1988, Arnaldo's son Marco began to manage the winery and in the 1990's the family continued to invest and reach new levels of quality utilizing technological innovation.In the mid 90's, with the new Sagrantino di Montefalco Riserva, Caprai received international acclaim and solidified its position as a quality producer of exceptional wines. Caprai's main focus is their top quality Sagrantino di Montefalco wine, produced exclusively from Sagrantino grapes. This variety has been grown in the Montefalco region for almost half a millenium.Marco Caprai says thatTradition - Innovation - Territory are the key words that drive the everyday efforts at the winery. While Caprai is firmly rooted in tradition, such as using the native variety of grape, they also focus on innovation and are constantly thriving to improve production methods both in the vineyard and the cellar.The Sagrantino Grape is used alone to produce Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG. Blended with other grapes, it produces Rosso di Montefalco DOC. This wine is intense, with blackberry and earthy accents. It should be aged for at least 10-15 years and is also used to make a special dessert wine, called passito by drying the grapes before pressing.
