Red or White? Is there really no choice in Tuscany?

Whenever we think of Tuscany, I think I'm right in assuming that we all instantly think of the wonderful red wines that are produced in this region;Chianti,Chianti Classico,Vino Nobile di Montepulciano,Brunello di Montalcino andCarmignano.euroEach of these wines have been afforded the prestigious DOCG status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita).euroHowever there are actually 6 Tuscan wines that carry this label and the 6th wine isVernaccia di San Gimignano, a white wine.Vernaccia di San Gimignano was first granted DOC status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) in 1966 and in 1990 it became the first white Italian wine to gain DOCG recognition.euros Made from the Vernaccia grape, it doesn't require any ageing, when the wine is aged for anything over one year it can be labelled a Riserva.euroThis wine is often described as a lemony clean wine, which is golden yellow in colour.Whilst there is only one white Tuscan DOCG wine, there is actually around 11 out of approximately 40 DOC wines.euroPomino is a white wine made from up to 80% of Pinot Blanc and / or Chardonnay grapes and up to a maximum of 30% of the Tuscan Trebbiano grape creates a creamy dry white wine.euroThe little knownBianco Pisano di San Tropez is comprised of up to 75% Trebbiano with the remainder being local white grape varieties.euroTheBianco di Montecarlo was among the first wine to use international grapes for their wines. This white wine is made of up to 70% Trebbiano and 30%-40% of either Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc or a blend of both.I think it is fair to say that at this stage in its development, winemakers are focusing more on their red wines. However, we're sure that it wont be long before they start truly experimenting with their white wines and concentrate on blending international white grapes as the most common Tuscan white grape is Trebbiano, which, at its most complimentary, is described as a neutral grape. There is a choice, but at this stage it's still relatively limited even if it is certainly worth exploring!
